What is a Spirit Animal? | Animal Totems

I’ve always been attracted to and fascinated by the animal kingdom. I have so many random facts about animals in my head it’s ridiculous. I can’t help it. There is a message in every creature on this planet. Perhaps I always sensed it, even as a child.

Over the last few years, I’ve taken this passion for critters both big and small, and expanded on it. My learning has taken on a spiritual nature. I’ve written about a few Spirit Animals (FoxBlue HeronDolphin, Owl, and Squirrel) and yet, I hadn’t explained what one is, how to work with them, or even why you should care about who your Power Animal is. It’s time to correct that.

So now, based on my own experience, I bring you the answer to the question, What is a Spirit Animal?

What is a Spirit Animal?

A Spirit Animal, also known as Animal Totem or Power Animal, is an animal whose spirit has a special message or mission for you. They offer guidance, wisdom, and support. This is also known as their medicine in shamanism and Native American cultures. They may come into your life to help you through certain situations or to offer their strength and protection.

How do you know which animal is your Power Animal?

You may go outside your home everyday for a week and see a Raven as soon as you step outfront. You may encounter a Tiger in your dreams. You’ve been seeing images of Killer Whales everywhere! Perhaps you were always intrigued by Dolphins as a child. These are all Power Animals! You were attracted to or encountered them synchronistically. Is there a particular animal that you fear? Snake is often one of these creatures for most people. Perhaps it has something to do with this creatures inherent qualities. Snake is about change and transformation – the shedding of old skin. Is there a message they have to give to you that you’re resisting?

How do you make contact?

Go into meditation. There are plenty of Meet Your Spirit Animal meditations on YouTube! If a guided meditation doesn’t seem right for you, close your eyes, do some deep breathing, and see which animal comes to you. Don’t be put off if it is not an animal you were expecting. Say if you were hoping for an Eagle and instead a Bumble Bee comes to visit. Be open and willing to listen. I’m sure the meaning of this creature is pertinent to you and your situation. You can even set the intention before you go to sleep that you’d like to encounter your Spirit Animal in your dreams.

Do you have one Spirit Animal for your whole life?

Yes you can! Some stay for a lifetime. Others may come just for a short period of time to help you learn a lesson. Once the lesson has been learned, they may move on. You may have many animal teachers come in and out of your life as you grow spiritually.

Can you choose your Animal Totem?

Absolutely! Think about what qualities you would like to embody. Do you want to be more of a tiger in your relationship – abundant, fierce, and playful? Work with Tiger energy. Would you like to invite more focus into your work? Then choose a creature like Hawk. Do you want more peace and purity in your life? Work with the spirit of Dove. Do you want to invite more childlike energy into your day? Invite the spirit of Dolphin to come and play! You can also work with the energy of an animal you’ve always been fascinated with and want to learn more about.

How do you work with your Spirit Animal?

Meet with them in meditation. Ask them to be with you as you go about your day. Ask for their strength in trying circumstances. Ask them to help guide you in the right direction when you’re confused. Get a statutette, photo,or an item in their likeness. Something that reminds you of them. I, for example, have a Raven pendant I wear everyday. I also have a Raven figurine carved from black onyx that I keep on my altar. Try taking one day out of your week and embody their qualities. Walk as the Lion. Think and use your wisdom as the Owl. Be prepared and resourceful like the Squirrel. You can even invite them into your rituals and manifesting!

So you found your Spirit Animal…Now what?

Work with them daily. Ask to feel their presence. What does their energy feel like? Listen to and decipher the messages they bring. Keep an eye open for any signs they give you. When do you see your Spirit Animal? When do you most feel them? What were you just thinking about before they happened to cross your path, run across the road, or squwak loudly, gaining your undivided attention. There are messages in the synchronicity! Keep an eye out for it. Pay attention to the world around you. Expand your awareness. You may be surprised at what you find.

What’s your Animal Totem? How do you connect? What has been your experience since the spirit of this creature came into your awareness?

Squirrel as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

Squirrel has been ever present as of late, making chucking noises and happily bounding across the yard. As I sit at the window watching them intently searching for acorns, my thoughts turn to what this cheerful little creature has to share with us. Here is what it may mean if you feel called to discover Squirrel as a Spirit Animal.

Preparation
Winter is coming – and the Squirrel intuitively knows it. Months ahead, they begin planning and making their preparations for shelter and food stores for the long winter ahead. Squirrel teaches us to always be prepared. To think ahead. To gather your resources. What do you have now, what tools do you have at your disposal, that you can save for a rainy day? Maybe now is the time to save more money or invest in your education. What is an old skill that you can repurpose and use in a new way? You never know how what you already have in your repertoire will come in handy!

Expect the Unexpected

Squirrel is always on the look out for predators – he has to be. He also has to be crafty and cunning in how he avoids these dangers. Squirrel invites you to make a plan B so that you’re not blindsided by the unexpected. Squirrel knows it is better to climb to the tree tops for safety. This way he can get a bird’s eye view of the situation and maneuver accordingly.

Be Resourceful – and a little fiesty

Friendly and not afraid to let you know how they feel, squirrels are some of the most resourceful creatures out there! Squirrel may be telling you it’s time to survey your resources. What do you have? What can you share with others? Having a Squirrel animal totem also encourages you to be curious and to make new friends! Chat it up. This creature also reminds us that sometimes it’s okay to be bit nutty. It’s okay to be passionate and to express your pleasure or lack thereof.

Remember to help the planet 🌎💚

Squirrel isn’t afraid to do a little digging! With such a short attention span, squirrels forget where they buried their nuts within seconds. This actually turns out to be a good thing as although forgotten, these acorns have been given a chance to germinate, grow, and sprout new life. Squirrel encourages you to recycle, plant a tree or garden, donate your money or time to worth environmental causes. Squirrel also reminds us to live in an environmentally friendly and ethical way. When his acorns mature into trees, his energetic footprint provides oxygen for generations – long after Squirrel is gone. What kind of footprint do you leave on Mother Earth?

Squirrel is a small creature that may often be overlooked but his message packs a powerful punch. Don’t you think?

Owl as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

Owls and their haunting call bring forth so much symbolism from the depths of the subconscious. Have you been hearing their whisper in the forest? If this magical bird has perched itself in your awareness, it has a special lesson just for you! What is Owl encouraging you to do? More importantly, whoooo is Owl calling you to be?

Wisdom

Knowledge. The Keeper of Secrets. Magick. Study. Owl is classically associated with wisdom and learning. To gain wisdom, challenges are often called forth to be a teacher to us, so that particular lessons and skills can be learned. Owl asks you to reflect on past lessons. What wisdom did you gain from the situation? What lessons are your discovering right now? Owl also comes to recognize you for your continued growth and the lessons you have mastered. This majestic bird also invites you to bring more of a sense of magick, awe, wonder, and mystery into your life. Connect with the spirit of Owl for an extra boost when doing ritual or spellwork.

Clairaudience + Clairvoyance

Keen sense of hearing and vision, an awakening of these psychic senses. Owls have 3 eyelids and this fact can only make me think of one thing – the Third Eye or pineal gland. This is the center for your psychic sense of clairvoyance. Owls also have an acute sense of hearing which combined with great depth perception helps them tremendously in their hunting. Pay special attention to the messages you receive clairaudiently. The Owl calls upon you to work with and strengthen your psychic senses.

Perspective – The Owl Head Turn

Foresight, seeing the big picture, seeing the situation from the perspective of another. Extend your range of vision! Owls can rotate there heads to a max of 270 degrees without doing any damage! Does a situation have your feathers a bit ruffled? Owl says there is no harm at looking at things from a different point of view! This may also help you to understand someone else in a new way – especially someone you may not be getting along with. A new angle can bring refreshing insight, opportunity, and information as to what may be coming your way! Use this along with your intuition and clairvoyance to help you in decision making as well.

Dolphin as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

Dolphin has always been in my life in one form or another. As a child, I used to try to imitate the sounds they make and I wanted to swim with them (as mermaids do of course haha!). I’ve always loved them and often spend time with them in meditation. If Dolphin has swam across your path lately, here are some messages it may have for you!

Sense of Adventure

Let your adventurous side come out to play! Travel! Dolphin also invites you to dive straight into the waves, beneath the surface, and bring light and joy to the shadowy depths. Explore with the adventurous spirit of a child! Dolphin could be sending you a sign to go on that trip or vacation you’ve been thinking about taking, to try something new and daring! Step out of your comfort zone and go and do what you haven’t before! Don’t let fear keep you anchored close to shore – explore the unknown caverns of the Seven Seas, the unfamiliar parts of your soul even. Dare to dream.

Intelligence

Dolphins are highly intelligent and very emotional creatures – just like us! They have a very high IQ and can be quite complicated animals in their interactions. Dolphin encourages you to continue learning. You don’t have to be in school or taking a class to do so. There are many ways you can continue your education in the great school of life. Read, write, speak. Share and realize your intelligence. Make informed and intelligent decisions. Don’t take anything at first glance.Think about what it is that you’re facing and use your brain power to help you find a way through it.

Companionship

Dolphins live in pods and look out for each other always. They nurse their young together, hunt together, play together, live together. Dolphins are all about community. Companionship is very important to the Dolphin. Their social interactions are quite colorful and complicated. In these relationships they experience anger, violence, love, sadness, and even pleasure – they are the only known creatures to have sex for more than just procreation but for pleasure as well! Intriguing huh? Dolphin encourages you to take a look at how you interact with those in your “pod”. How do you work together? How can teamwork help the good and growth of all? How can you better your interactions and relationships with those you care about? What can you do to be more helpful or involved in your community?

Communication and Vibration – Echolocation

Dolphins use echolocation to hunt and communicate with other Dolphins. Echolocation allows animals to use vibrations to communicate and is nature’s sonar, allowing the animal to see better. These sound waves bounce off of objects and comes back to the animal, giving them information to process such as the distance between them and the object or even what that particular object is! Dolphin encourages you to work on raising your vibration spiritually, and to learn about different types of energy and vibration. Read about energy work and it’s different modalities. Dolphin also encourages you to communicate freely with others. Work with your Throat Chakra. Dolphin asks you to take a look at if you are expressing yourself clearly and effectively.

Joy, Laughter, and Play

Jumping, diving, laughing, playing under the sea. Twisting, turning, whirling, and grinning – Dolphin is probably the most playful of all spirit animals. They are sweet, nurturing, gentle, and kind. They are optimistic and always looking for fun. They are such emotive creatures! Did you know that there’s a connection between Dolphins and Mermaids as well? How cool is that?! Dolphin encourages you to invite more joy, laughter, and play into your life. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Let loose, be silly, and don’t sweat the small stuff! Dolphin invites you to allow the spirit of your inner child to come out and dance, sing, and be free! Give yourself permission to do so.

Have you seen playful Dolphin jumping over the waves on your path? Has it invited you to swim with the Mermaids? I’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts on this intelligent creature!

Great Blue Heron as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

When we cross paths with Heron, what does he want us to know? What is his message for us? In this blog post, I will talk about the Blue Heron as a Spirit Animal.

Peace, serenity, stillness, patience, silence, grace, and healing. These are the traits that come to mind when I think of this beautiful bird. I’ve recently had 2 encounters with this majestic animal. Both times that I witnessed the creature, I immediately became like the heron itself – quiet, still, and contemplative. The Great Blue Heron is a true Mystic of the Chesapeake! Here are some things I’ve learned about the spirit of the Great Blue Heron.

Great Blue Heron pic 2

feat. The Winged Enchantment Oracle + The Earthbound Oracle

Know Thyself

Heron’s are solitary creatures. They do not hunt or live in flocks. Since they spend so much time with themselves, they really must become their own best friend and ally – but that doesn’t seem to bother them too much! The Heron comes to us with the message to take time out of your busy schedule and truly get to know yourself. The best way to do that is to spend time alone! Put away distractions – the cell phone, the Xbox, the iPod, Facebook, anything that you can watch, listen to, play, or that makes noise. Sit in the silence with yourself. Be in the present moment. Don’t worry about the future or the past. Who are you – right now?  Who are you without prying eyes? Who are you bare bones? What is in your heart? Yes, it will probably be uncomfortable the first couple of times you try this exercise. In the 21st century, silence can  feel deafening with life and the media always hurling things our way! Silence can be scary. Being alone can be intimidating. But the key here is that you can be surrounded by people and feel completely alone. Blue Heron is never lonely because he knows he can rely on himself and is confident in who he is! Get to know yourself – your strengths, your weaknesses, your talents. Become your own best friend. That way, even when there is no one in your physical presence, you are never alone. You carry YOU with you wherever you go! Do you want to be your own biggest cheerleader or do you want to be a stranger to yourself? If you don’t know who you are, how can you expect someone else to?

Be Still + Reflect

As the Great Blue Heron stares into the water, ever so patiently waiting for a yummy morsel to swim by, he has lots of time to contemplate. His reflection stares, unblinking, unmoving, back at him. What does he see – past battle scars and ruffled feathers or a peaceful, calm, and sleek independence?  Be still in the present moment and reflect on your life and who you are. The Heron comes to us with a message of meditate and contemplate. You are exactly where you need to be right now in this moment! When this graceful bird crosses your path, stop and think – just pause. Sometimes that is all we need to do when we are in the middle of a chaotic situation or a difficult decision. If we pause long enough in disturbed waters, the ripples will smooth out, and we can once again gain clarity.

SEIZE OPPORTUNITY!

The Heron is a patient hunter. Barely moving, with eyes unblinking, they search the surface of the water with their eyes. Daring not to breathe, for the slightest breath may cause a ripple in the water. They wait like tall statues, unbearably still, until a fish swims by unaware of the danger overhead. The moment has come – the heron moves at lightening speed, catching the fish and gulping it down. If you do so much as blink you will miss it! Heron comes with the message to wait for the perfect opportunity before you strike. You will know when it is time. I also think this has a warning element of not letting opportunity pass you by or you may go hungry! Don’t be too afraid to make a move. Don’t hesitate or you might miss the moment you’ve been dreaming of! Go after your prize! Be confident in yourself when you strike and you won’t miss your mark.

Home Sweet Home

The Heron is always moving between the worlds of water, earth, and sky. He has to feel a sense of home in every one. He is comfortable in all of these environments and can move from one to the other without any fear or resistance. He flows, flies, glides, swoops, and dives in and out of these 3 habitats. He knows how to use each of these elements for their resources to help his survival. Become one with your surroundings. Where are you most at home? How do you co-create with nature and your environment (especially to find opportunity)? How easily do you adapt to change in your environment? Learn about your environment and how you can tap into its resources. Realize that you are a part of a vast ecosystem. Know that whatever you do, it will create a ripple effect throughout your environment. Everything is effected because everything is connected. For example, how does your work life, carry over into your home life, carry over into your romantic life? Are there any boundaries that you need to set between them all? Are you expecting something from a situation or from someone that they are just not capable of giving to you (often times to no fault of their own)? The Great Blue Heron knows he won’t catch a fish in the sky and that he can’t fly in the water. He knows that he must go to the water if he’s hungry and wants to hunt. He takes to the skies if he wants to fly! How can you be more in the flow with the different parts of your life and the demands of each? Do you know where to go to get what you need? When you’re secure in who you are and your capabilities, you can feel at home almost anywhere!

Fox as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

Fox cards pic

feat. Lumina Tarot and the Connected + Free Oracle

What does the Fox say?

I have had several encounters with Fox recently. They’ve been popping up wherever I go – from images and videos on Facebook to even having a stare down with one out front of my home! As of late, rarely a week goes by without me having some kind of interaction with this lovely creature. I decided to do some research on the meaning of Fox and what Fox may have to tell us.

My biggest encounter with Fox

I had been seeing Fox for several months by this point. I was very confused as to what it meant for me every time it showed up in my life. It was late at night on Valentine’s Day. A family member was sick and had just been rushed off to the hospital.  I had stepped outside to get some fresh air and do some thinking. I wasn’t paying attention to too much of anything when something told me to look up. When I did, standing out in the darkness, there in a red blaze of glory, was a fox. I stopped moving, my breath caught in my throat.  It seemed to have appeared out of thin air. It looked so magical standing there! A message just for me. We locked eyes for a good minute or so. I tried to tune in to what it was trying to communicate with me as I know it had a message for me. Unfortunately no matter how hard I tried to tune in, I couldn’t understand what it wanted to tell me (I am still working diligently to find the answer). After a few more moments, we dropped eye contact and the fox scampered off into a neighbor’s backyard. In all my years of living where I do, this has never happened to me before. Needless to say I was stunned.

So what does the Fox say?

When I first thought about the fox, I believed they were just sly and cunning tricksters. Fox is so much more! The Fox is a smart and daring creature. A survivor. Foxes can easily blend into their surroundings, masters of the art of camouflage, when in hiding or stalking their prey. They can live in cities, suburbs, or out in the country (they’re very adaptable and resourceful creatures!) and yet may never be witnessed by the human eye! Fox wants you to take a look at your surroundings and see how they are affecting you and how you are adapting to them.

Taking quick, swift, silent action is the way of the Fox. They are playful and yes, they can be a bit mischievous! The Red Fox excites passion, creativity, sexuality, mystery, and a hint of danger – just like the terms vixen or stone cold fox imply. Fox is also a shapeshifter, a walker between the worlds (since they mainly comes out at dusk/dawn), who revels in the subconscious and the unknown. Since there are 21 species of Fox, it is also associated with The World card in tarot. This is about connection with all there is, unification, community, integration, endings and beginnings.

Passion & Discernment

Fox encourages us to be our most bold and loving self. To only come out into the open when the moment is just right. Fox asks us if we are showing our true intentions,  following our truth, and living our most passionate life. Are you?

Stay foxy wild one!
